Sometimes, after I copied files to my USB stick with Kubuntu Linux, the data was corrupted. Furthermore, the copying process seemed far to quick for USB 1.0. In order to make sure that all your data gets copied, change to the directory where to USB stick is mounted, e.g. /mnt/stick/ and use the “sync” command. sync will flush the file system buffers. After sync has finished, you can unmount the stick and all the data should be on it.

Did you really unmount the disk or simply unplug it?
When I call umount (either via console or in KDE) the usb disk is operating (locks the console or displays a dialog with a progress bar) and automatically sync’s missing data to the disk.
It seems like Kubuntu’s got a big internal cache for files on usb media, which accelerates felt write time (nice when often saving small files to usb disk) but has the disadvantage of taking a long time to sync the drives….
